Sigurgeir Jónsson says he doesn’t really know why he grew so old. He had quite a tough life on the whole. He grew up on the island of Flatey and worked as a bricklayer. “On the construction site we had often dried fish with butter for lunch. Maybe that’s why I’m still alive. Or because the heavy lifting and carrying has kept me fit! I think you just have to pay attention to your health and avoid eating sweets,” he says. He and his wife, who died in 1994, had no children, but he doesn’t feel alone. “I sing with others. That makes me happy.”
